Get Fit Watching TV

0

Colin Lenton"That cardio-circuit-training class at the gym is really working," my husband observed one morning as I was putting on my gym clothes. “Um, no, it's not," I replied. "The truth is, I've been getting this body by watching television."

You see, when my gym recently took my favorite butt-whooping cardio class off the schedule, I was forced to go back to my old cardio-and-strength-training routine. Nothing special, except now, instead of working out with a fitness instructor, I work out with The Real Housewives of New York City. And I'm really seeing results.

Later that morning, I headed to the gym, where I got on my favorite machine—the elliptical trainer. Toward the end of my 45-minute workout session, I realized that I was still two commercial breaks away from finding out which disreputable young woman would get booted from the Rock of Love Bus. Without even thinking, I added an extra 15 minutes on the machine so I could watch until the end of the episode.

Over my next three workouts, I lingered longer on the elliptical to watch E! True Hollywood Story: Anna Nicole Smith, the makeover reveal on What Not to Wear, and the brat's grand entrance on My Super Sweet 16. Add up all those bonus minutes, and I had tacked on an extra hour to my weekly cardio routine in the most counterintuitive, couch-potatoey way possible. It's ironic, yes, but my “secret” to getting in shape is awesomely bad TV.

For years I went to a small no-frills gym. What did it have? Three treadmills, an elliptical, a recumbent bike, a stair-climber, a rack of free weights, and a sad stack of paper cups next to the water fountain. What did it not have? Everything else. Not only did it lack The View, but it didn't have a view—the windows faced an empty parking lot. Making it through 45 minutes of any kind of exercise was always a struggle, especially if I'd forgotten to bring my iPod.

But I've joined a different gym. And now I work out watching Dr. Phil, Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew, and The Doctors, and I never watch the clock—or my heart-rate monitor.

This made me think: Maybe my shows are a little too good at distracting me from my grueling workouts? I asked Vera, a trainer at my gym, if it's possible that too much TV during exercise could actually be bad for me. "Like listening to music, watching TV is passive, so you can enjoy it and still focus on your workout,” she replied. "Reading a book, by contrast, requires more engagement. You have to turn pages, so you're more likely to slow down or get sloppy" … or fall off completely. At my old gym, I once forgot that I was exercising and fell off the elliptical while trying to read a novel. From then on, I only looked at the pictures in trashy tabloids while working out on a machine. But not even the juiciest celeb rag could compete with the superb companionship of TV.

The only downside to my exercise secret was the reaction from my friends. When I told them that watching television motivates me to work out longer, they all looked at me like they wanted to throw something at me. They wondered why anyone would spend more time at the gym than absolutely necessary. But the explanation is simple: Working on a flat stomach in front of a flat screen takes the guilt out of watching guilty pleasures like The Hills. Well, most of the guilt anyway.

Viva Vegetables!

0

I cant control what kind of junk my 2-year-old, Sean, eats at day care or at his grandmothers house. But Im determined to make sure he eats greens at home.

Thats where a love for vegetables was imprinted on my sister, brother, and me by my mother and Mollie Katzen, one of the founders of the Moosewood Restaurant in Ithaca, N.Y., and the author of several cookbooks, including a classic called The Enchanted Broccoli Forest.

The EBF, published in 1982, literally puts vegetables on a pedestal. The title comes from a dish in which cooked broccoli is embedded in a casserole of brown rice. The presentation looks like a verdant forest and makes these crucifers look and taste like something out of a fairly tale. We gobbled it up.

Fast-forward 25 years and you have this generations answer to Mollie Katzen: Jessica Seinfeld. Seinfelds cooking credentials begin and end with her being Jerry Seinfelds wife.

Jessica Seinfelds cookbook, Deceptively Delicious, assumes that all kids despise vegetables and that moms need to be sneaky if they want to get them in their diets. Her recipes suggest hiding cauliflower puree in mozzarella sticks, spinach puree in pizza and brownies, and pumpkin and squash puree in chocolate chip cupcakes. If that sounds like a mammoth amount of work—not to mention unpalatable—you are correct.

I spent last Sunday making Seinfelds chocolate chip cookies with chickpeas, and Sean rejected them right out of the oven by smashing one onto the table. Heres the head-scratcher, though: This kid loves chickpeas! He eats them like raisins, and he loves Katzens chickpea stew. What he doesnt like is chickpeas in his dessert.

And thats where Seinfelds book misses the mark. If you teach kids that foods like spinach and broccoli are so yucky they need to pulverized and hidden in cookies and cupcakes, they are never going to eat them. If you celebrate veggies in their glorious naked state, theyll learn to love them.

Heres Sean doing his nightly ritual: tossing salad and eating most of it with his fingers. Its fun for him and gratifying for me. I hope Mollie Katzen would be proud.

Foodie Friday: La Tortilla Factory Handmade Tortillas

0

These wraps have whole grains, a soft texture, and enough spices to capture a South of the Border flavor.

The product: La Tortilla Factory tortillas ($3–$5 for a pack of 6–10 tortillas; available in grocery stores nationwide, but not currently available online)

The taste factor: Let's be honest; there's not a lot you can do to make a tortilla taste any different than the next one on the shelf. Most have a slight corn taste, light texture, and the ability to let you taste what's in your wrap, not the wrap itself. However, La Tortilla managed to go one step above that. Their handmade tortillas have a blend of corn and wheat you can actually taste, plus a slightly thicker (and perhaps richer) texture. The chipotle variety has a huge punch of spiciness with chile peppers and salt, unlike anything I've tried before.

The health factor: The whole grains symbol can be found on the back of these tortillas, providing 14 grams or more per serving. Whole grains are associated with a lower body mass index (BMI) and improved satiety—plus they have a naturally hearty taste. For 90 calories per tortilla, that's a good deal, even if they only contain 1 gram of fiber.

Editors' pick: The handmade tortillas in chipotle. This flavor-packed wrap is the perfect addition to a Mexican feast. It would be delicious with lime-marinated fish or roasted peppers and mushrooms.

Why we love it: Any product that adds to your daily dose of whole grains is OK in our book. But the fact that these tortillas have plenty of flavor and an authentic texture have us dreaming up our next taco night menu.

Foodie Friday: Honest Tea Kombucha

0

Tea is already low-cal and rich in antioxidants. So what happens with you combine it with probiotic cultures? A refreshing treat that soothes your system.

The product: Honest Tea's Kombucha line ($3.40–$4; available at Whole Foods and other groceries)

The taste factor: Drinks that combine fruit and tea flavors aren't a new concept, but finding a drink whose fruit flavors don't overpower your taste buds is a rare find. These tangy, semi-effervescent tea drinks come in three flavors—Berry Hibiscus, Lemon Ginger, and Peach Mango—and have just the right mix of fruit flavor to tea. And the best part is that it's not too sweet and doesn't have an artificial sweetener aftertaste.

The health factor: At 35 calories and7 gramsof sugar a serving (each bottle has two servings), this drink won't do too much diet damage. Kombucha is made by fermenting black or green tea and sugar with active cultures, creating acids that may help you with digestion. These probiotics may aid in digestion and boost immunity.

Editors' pick: Peach Mango. This light, tangy drink left us 100% satisfied.

Why we love it: Not only is this drink organic and brewed with fair-trade-certified tea, but it also tastes delicious, won't wreck our diet, and may keep us healthy.

Cocktail Confidential: How Many Calories are Really in Your Favorite Drinks?

0

Istockphoto

From Health magazine
For now, the Feds will keep you guessing how many calories are in your favorite drink. But we won't.

And that's something the National Consumers League (NCL) and the Center for Science in the Public Interest aim to change.

They, along with 67 other consumer groups, are urging the government to require labels that list not just calories and alcohol content, but also how many servings each container has and what its ingredients are. That way, people can steer clear of allergens like the nuts and dairy that are often found in cocktail mixes.

Right now, liquor labels are a mishmash of confusing regulations and information, explains Linda Golodner, president of NCL. Wine and hard liquors list alcohol content, but it is not mandatory for beer. And while "light" beer and low-alcohol wines list calories, regular beer, wine, and hard liquors generally don't. Golodner argues that consumers need basic label information to make smart choices about what they drink, just as they do about the food they eat.

Liquor lowdown
Some beverage companies are already listing details voluntarily. That's particularly true of distilled-spirits makers, who are happy to point out that their products have fewer carbs or calories. "We're adamant about the need for putting alcohol content on labels," says Monica Gourovitch, PhD, senior vice president of scientific affairs at the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, a trade group that includes producers of rum, vodka, and other spirits. But Gourovitch says her group wants listing nutrients and ingredients to be done on a voluntary basis, and left up to the individual producers.

Until the Feds sort out what to make mandatory on labels for your favorite microbrew or sauvignon blanc, here's our cheat sheet to help you figure out whether to order that second round of mojitos. After all, you do want to fit into that cocktail dress.

How many calories are in that drink? Here's our happy-hour cheat sheet:

Pregnancy Odds: Fertility Success Rates in Your 30s and 40s

A healthy 30-year-old has only about a 20% chance each month to get pregnant naturally; by age 40, that drops to about 5%, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Almost a third of women ages 40 to 44 are infertile, compared with 22% of women ages 35 to 39 and 9% of women 25 to 29.

“By the time a woman reaches 43 or 44, she really only has a 1% chance per month of conceiving naturally on her own,” says Richard Paulson, MD, a leading pregnancy researcher. “After that, she needs to use donor eggs.”

Here, success rates (transfers resulting in live births) using assisted reproductive technologies (ART), of which in vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most common.

Foodie Friday: Peet's Coffee

0

Flavorful coffee thats good for me and doesnt harm the Earth in the process? Ill take it! Its nice to know not only where your coffee beans are coming from and how they were produced, but also how your purchase benefits the lives of the small-scale farmers growing them. Peets Uzuri coffee is sustainably grown and has an aroma that is both tastefully and emotionally satisfying to java enthusiasts.

The product: Peet's Uzuri African Blend coffee ($14 per pound; available at Peets.com beginning mid-February and at select grocery stores nationwide)

The taste factor: The flowery fragrance draws you in to the rich flavors of this African blend. A mix between medium and strong, this coffee blend features a malty-sweet flavoring with hidden tones of dark berry. The coffee goes down silky smooth and can hold its own without sugar or cream.

The health factor: Coffee is a natural, plant-based beverage, but farming processes can sometimes get in the way of this "natural" product. Peets guarantees a wholesome blend that goes through sustainable farming processes. Plus, a morning cup of joe provides antioxidants that may protect against Parkinsons disease, Alzheimers, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. Although virtually calorie-free, remember that loading up on cream, sugar, and syrups may turn your coffee into an unwanted calorie fest.

Why we love it: Peets Coffee offers java from many world regions, including Central America, Africa, Arabia, and the Pacific. Each region embodies its own distinct coffee flavor and is enhanced when blended together. The Uzuri African blend is a combination of coffee beans from Rwanda, Tanzania, and Kenya. Uzuri means “excellent” and “beautiful” in Swahili and was named by the farmers growing the beans. We absolutely agree!

Brooke Shields on Beauty, Marriage, And Self-Esteem

0

Andrew EcclesFrom Health magazineModel, movie star, TV actress, Broadway performer, and children's book author Brooke Shields continues her conversation with Health about aging, raising children, and growing up Bohemian.

Q: You may be 43, but you look 23, so clearly youre doing something right. Whats the rest of your skin care routine?
A: I use a foaming cleanser. But Ive been wearing so much makeup lately, Ive started to break out—yeah, Ive now decided to go through adolescence, because I didnt go through it when I was supposed to! [laughs] The important thing is that my face is clean, but I have three things: I have to really cleanse my skin, use an astringent because of the breakouts, and then a really deep moisturizer.

I dont care how greasy I look. Its funny though, all these years, Ive just found that theres no miracle product. I love all of it. My husband perpetually makes fun of me about my creams and my jars and potions and lotions, but its simpler than anyone makes it: clean, tone, keep yourself moisturized. The rest is internal: Protect yourself from the sun and drink water.

Q: Is there any marriage advice that you think is just plain wrong?
A: That love is enough. Its not practical. Without love, I dont think its possible, but its not the only thing. Love without communication means nothing. Love with completely different views on how you want to raise children? Doesnt work.

Love can produce the children, but it has nothing to do with the raising of the children. I grew up thinking, Oh, thats it. All I have to do is fall in love. [sighs]. You may think love will change everything, but it really is different with children. Children dont necessarily bring you together, they challenge you.

Q: Have you and Chris formed any habits to keep your bond strong?
A: We really have to have date night. The other morning, we had an hour. And instead of getting involved as we do with our emails and the calendar, I was like, “Please, lets just go have coffee out on the porch.” He got the paper, and we went and sat out, and he had his glasses. I said, “Look at us, Grandpa!” It maybe lasted 45 minutes before life came back at us.

Q: With what sounds like a busy life, are you able to multi-task your workouts the same way youre able to multi-task other things?
A: I used to. But the truth of the matter is, it really started to degrade the quality of the workout and the purpose of it to me. Because one of the things I feel after Ive worked out most is that my mind needed the break. Its the same thing with breastfeeding.

I used to do a million different things when I was breastfeeding, and finally my husband was like, “What are you doing? Dont you think youre missing out?” I thought I was being productive, and it wasnt until I stopped doing all that, and…Im gonna start to cry. But, watching her little cheeks go in and out, thats the most amazing thing Ive ever seen in my life. And I took a deep breath, and my milk came in more. I have to remind myself all the time, things are just too busy. You need the balance.

Next Page: So you didn't have a lot of confidence growing up? [ pagebreak ]Q: So you didnt have a good sense of self-esteem when you were younger?
A: I had it, but it was a bit warped. I [used to think], ‘Im going to be neat, organized and do really well in school. That was my thing. Confidence was just brain brain brain—thats where all my sense of confidence came from. Nothing else. That was going to be my ticket. I dont know how I knew.

Q: Youve had a challenging childhood. How does that inform how you raise your daughters?
A: Well, I definitely see how unique my upbringing was, and how glad that theyre not being subjected to it. But Im also so used to drama. I was always with a single mom and we never had schedules or anything. We were just Bohemian, us against the world, which was kind of great, but it certainly didnt breed security. Ive gotten hyper-sensitive to schedules and bath time, and eating at the dinner table. We dont just “Bohemian” go out at nine oclock and go get Chinese Food.

Q: Youre often seen wearing sleeveless dresses and toned arms, similar to Michelle Obama.
A: Do you know, Ive been getting that! I just think that theres so much to be proud of to see a physically fit woman. I think its so sexy. Ive never not had them, and so, in order to not feel masculine or big, I had to throw it around in my head and celebrate it. Ive never been petite, Ive never been skinny. You have to flip it around and make it work for you.

Q: Do you ever need to lose a quick 5 pounds? And if so, whats your go-to way?
A: I would cut out my beer, begrudgingly. And I would probably spin regularly, just up it. And I would probably stop eating at 6 oclock and just eat little meals all throughout the day. Ive never been good on fasts or anything, because then Ill obsess over what I cant have and Ill want 10 pounds of it.

Q: Is there anything youve had to cut out of your busy life that you miss?
A: I feel like its as balanced as its going to be. I think once you have children, you just dont have the same kind of freedom to pick up and go. But then, I sort of think, how often did I really do it? How spontaneous was I really? Part of what I think I miss is this fantasy of my wild days [laughs], but they never existed!

Q: Youre always trying something new, from Broadway to books to movies. Do you have to push yourself to try new things? Are you ever afraid youre going to fail?
A: I just hate thinking Im going to miss out. Now that I have these things under my belt, I think, ‘Wow, what else is possible? Id hate to look back and think, ‘I could have written that book. Or, wow, I could have been a singer/dancer. I dont like how I feel with regret.

Q: Youve already done so much in life, but whats left on your bucket list?
A: I want to go to India. I want to go back to Africa. Im not the daredevil that I used to be—I used to really want to do all that bungee jumping, and now I just kind of want to live instead [laughs]. It just seems more appealing to me. I also want to write a memoir in the next 10 years. Ooh, also I want to learn to play an instrument; I definitely want to learn to play the piano.

Q: When do you feel at the peak of happiness?
A: I have to have just finished a Broadway musical, and Im on a beach with my kids and my husband and the dog. I remember experiencing that minus the children after Cabaret, and the sense of relief and exhaustion I felt. Like, for me to be really relaxed, I have to be exhausted and feel like I so deserve it.

1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Instructions:
1. Heat 3 tablespoons oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onion and fennel; saute 5 minutes or until tender. Add minced garlic, thyme, and red pepper; saute 1 minute. Stir in tomato paste; cook 1 minute. Add wine, cook on high 5 minutes or until reduced by half. Add tomatoes with juices, clam juice, water, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Boil; reduce heat to low, and simmer, partially covered, 10 minutes.

2. Preheat oven to 300°. Raise heat on stove to medium; add clams. Cover; cook 5–8 minutes or until shells are just opened. Remove clams (discard unopened shells). Set aside; keep warm. Lower heat to simmer. Season halibut with remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper; add to pot with basil. Cover; cook 2 minutes. Turn off heat, and stir in shrimp and scallops; cover. Let sit 6–8 minutes or until shrimp and scallops are just cooked. Return clams to pot; cover.

3. Arrange bread on a baking sheet. Drizzle with remaining 1–2 tablespoons oil; bake 12–15 minutes or until golden. Rub smashed garlic onto each slice.

4. Ladle soup into 6 bowls; sprinkle with parsley. (Serving size: 2 cups soup and 2 slices toast)
