Turns out, Alexander-Wright's neck pain and exhaustion had been early warning signs of a heart attack (in which blood flow to a section of heart muscle is blocked, causing damage there). Though Alexander-Wright did feel chest tightness before her attack, less than a third of women do, which is one reason why twice as many women die of heart attacks as men. "Heart attack is not just a man's deal," says Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Heart disease—a name for the dangerous buildup of plaque in your arteries that could lead to an attack or stroke—"is the number-one killer of women," she adds.<\/p>\n

One problem: Many women are walking around with high cholesterol or blood pressure without even realizing it, which puts them at higher risk. The reassuring news is the more you know about the care and feeding of this vital organ, the stronger and healthier yours will be.<\/p>\n

Problem No. 1: Hypertension<\/b><\/p>\n

The lowdown<\/b>. About half of women over 45 have hypertension (a.k.a. high blood pressure<\/a>), says Nieca Goldberg, MD, medical director of NYU Langone Medical Center's Women's Heart Program.<\/p>\n

Why that's a problem: Over time, elevated blood pressure can make your arteries less flexible, so it's more difficult for blood to flow through them. It can also damage blood vessels, possibly leading to kidney failure or blindness, or triggering the formation of plaque that can cause heart attack or stroke.<\/p>\n

"We're seeing hyper-tension now in younger and younger women since more are overweight," adds Leslie Cho, MD, director of the Women's Cardiovascular Center at the Cleveland Clinic. "Extra pounds put strain on all body parts, including your arteries." Being sedentary, eating too much salt, and having a family history or a condition such as psoriasis or diabetes can also put you at risk. Did you develop high BP while you were pregnant? Even if your numbers went back down after delivery, you're at higher risk of getting the condition again.<\/p>\n

What it feels like<\/b>. Most often, nothing. But if you find yourself feeling dizzy, having blurry vision<\/a>, or getting frequent headaches, see your doctor.<\/p>\n

Rx<\/b>. Have your primary care doctor or gyno check your blood pressure yearly. The optimal reading is under 120\/80; if you're borderline high (130\/80), you should get rechecked a few weeks later. The good news: Lifestyle tweaks such as losing weight, sticking to less than 1,200 milligrams of salt a day, exercising regularly, and actively managing stress may lower your blood pressure in just three months, if you're at borderline, says Jennifer H. Mieres, MD, a professor of cardiology at North Shore–LIJ Health System in New York and spokesperson for the American Heart Association (AHA). If your blood pressure is high (over 140\/90), your doc may give you meds such as diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or beta-blockers to reduce it.

Problem No. 2: Palpitations<\/b><\/p>\n

The lowdown<\/b>. A rapid, fluttering heartbeat is scary, for sure, but most of the time, palpitations are nothing to worry about. They're often due to lifestyle factors such as stress, too much caffeine, dehydration, or the use of decongestants, Dr. Cho explains. But you should definitely get them checked out, because they can be a sign of a medical condition such as hyperthyroidism (where your body secretes too much thyroid hormone) or an abnormal heart rhythm known as an arrhythmia, which generally isn't dangerous.<\/p>\n

What it feels like<\/b>. Skipped, fluttering, pounding, or quickened heartbeats that occur even when you're at rest. On the extreme side, a common arrhythmia called supraventricular tachycardia can cause fainting or dizzy spells.<\/p>\n

Rx<\/b>. If this is the first time you've noticed palpitations, make sure you drink lots of water and avoid caffeine. If they persist, see your doc for an electrocardiogram (a test that records your heart's electrical impulses) or a Holter monitor (a test for arrhythmia). Doing a vagal maneuver—in which you bear down as if you're going "number-two"—treats mild cases by slowing the heart's electrical impulses. If that doesn't work, your doctor may prescribe meds or do a procedure to reset your electrical signals.<\/p>\n

Problem No. 3: High cholesterol<\/b><\/p>\n

The lowdown<\/b>. Believe it or not, cholesterol's not all bad. You need some of this waxy, fat-like substance in your blood to help produce hormones like estrogen. A cholesterol test measures three components:<\/p>\n

Low density lipoprotein (LDL), a.k.a. "bad" cholesterol, can form plaque in your arteries that puts you at risk of a heart attack or stroke. LDL particles come in different sizes; smaller, denser particles seem more likely to create plaque than larger ones.<\/p>\n

High density lipoprotein (HDL) is known as "good" cholesterol because it carries excess cholesterol away from your arteries.<\/p>\n

Triglycerides are a fat, made by your body, that can clog your arteries.<\/p>\n

About one-third of women have high total cholesterol. Being overweight or inactive and eating a fatty diet can raise it. So can a genetic predisposition and even menopause: As estrogen levels drop, we make less HDL, and more LDL and triglycerides.<\/p>\n

What it feels like<\/b>. No symptoms.<\/p>\n

Rx<\/b>. Get screened by your primary care physician. If your levels are normal, get retested every five years—and yearly right after menopause, Dr. Mieres suggests. Got a borderline or high reading? Your doctor may suggest more frequent screenings. But don't worry: This exercise plan<\/a> can help. So can dropping your fat intake. If those tweaks don't work within 12 weeks, you'll need meds such as statins. What if your cholesterol is normal but you have a strong family history of heart disease?
