But it's important to keep your thermometer clean so you avoid spreading germs between family members.

How-to-Disinfect-a-Thermometer-and-When-You-Need-to-Do-It-AdobeStock_89707367 How-to-Disinfect-a-Thermometer-and-When-You-Need-to-Do-It-AdobeStock_89707367 , Stoll says. (If your hands are visibly dirty, you should go for the soap and water option, she adds.)

Only when your hands are clean should you start the disinfection process.

How to disinfect a digital thermometer

First, wipe down your digital thermometer with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol, Stoll says. (Rubbing alcohol with an alcohol level of 60% or higher is most effective at killing bacteria, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.) If you don't have rubbing alcohol, use a bleach wipe instead.

"The action of rubbing the surface of the thermometer helps to disinfect," Stoll explains. Take care not to submerge the digital part of the thermometer in fluid (water and electronic components don't mix well), though the tip can be rinsed in water if desired. Finally, always leave it to air dry before putting it into storage.

Get into the habit of doing this every time the same thermometer is used by two different people and/or used by the same person after a long time.

How to disinfect a forehead thermometer

A temporal artery thermometer is used externally, measuring infrared heat waves coming off the blood vessel that runs across the forehead just below the skin. Some of these thermometers don't actually come into direct contact with the skin, but they should still be sanitized before and after each use, Ramzi Yacoub, PharmD, the chief pharmacy officer at SingleCare, tells Health.

He recommends the same method you use to sanitize a digital thermometer: Soak a cotton ball or pad with rubbing alcohol that has at least 60% alcohol volume, or use a bleach wipe. Again, give the thermometer time to air dry before putting it back into storage.

How to disinfect a rectal thermometer

The American Academy of Pediatrics says rectal thermometers (inserted into the anus) are the most accurate and recommends them for use on children up to age 4 years.

"Both oral and rectal thermometers touch a person's mucus membranes, so it's very important to disinfect well," Stoll says. She advises having separate oral and rectal thermometers (even if the packaging says it's suitable for both uses), and labelling them to avoid accidentally using a rectal thermometer in the mouth.

California-based infectious disease specialist Javeed Siddiqui, MD, MPH, co-founder and chief medical officer at telemedicine company TeleMed2U, recommends using an anti-bacterial soap to clean a rectal thermometer, making certain that all fecal matter is removed (he suggests doing this twice, to be extra sure). After cleaning, dry the rectal thermometer with a clean towel, then apply rubbing alcohol. It's a good idea to also check the thermometer manufacturer's guidelines, as they might recommend a particular type of disinfectant, such as an iodine or glutaraldehyde solution.

"It's critically important that the disinfectant be allowed to dry," Dr. Siddiqui says. "This drying process allows for appropriate disinfection." When the disinfectant is completely dry, rinse the thermometer with cold water, then wipe it dry with a clean paper towel.

How to disinfect an ear thermometer

An ear thermometer has a tiny sensor that's inserted into the ear canal to measure temperature. You can buy disposable covers or caps to put over the sensor, but if you don't have these, you can keep it clean between uses by wiping the sensor with a cotton swab or pad dipped in rubbing alcohol (at least 60% alcohol volume—you know the drill) or a bleach wipe, and let it dry, Yacoub says. You can also wipe the body of the thermometer with a slightly damp cloth, but make sure you don't submerge it in water, as this could damage the device.

RELATED: Sanitize vs. Disinfect: What's the Difference?

Can multiple people use the same thermometer?

Stoll says that the best practice is to have a separate thermometer for each member of a household. But if that's not possible, then yes, multiple people can use the same thermometer—provided you disinfect it when necessary, Yacoub says. He emphasizes that it's important to do this before and after each use even if the body temperature reading is normal (this varies by person, age, and time of day, but is generally accepted to be 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

Disinfecting a thermometer is particularly important when it's used on children because they are more susceptible to sharing and spreading germs, Chelsea Johnson, MD, FAAP, from digital primary care platform K Health, tells Health.

Before using a thermometer, it's important to check the manufacturer's recommendations and guidelines, according to Dr. Siddiqui. Some thermometers are intended for single use, while others can be disinfected and uses multiple times, he says. If your thermometer is the disposable sort, it's not designed to be used again, even if you disinfect it after use.

This Is How Long You Should Wait Before Swimming in a Newly Opened Pool https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-how-long-after-shocking-pool-safe-to-swim/ https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-how-long-after-shocking-pool-safe-to-swim/#respond Tue, 25 May 2021 00:00:00 +0000 https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-how-long-after-shocking-pool-safe-to-swim/ It's finally swimming season again, and that means pools everywhere are gearing up to help cool you (and plenty of other people) down. But pools aren't just magically ready to go when warm weather hits—they have to be prepped and shocked first.

Shocking is a crucial part of having a clean pool, but it involves the use of some pretty hefty chemicals, including chlorine. It's only natural to wonder when you can dive in after all of that.

Experts say you definitely shouldn't rush the process—here's why.

when it’s safe to go in your pool after shocking it when it’s safe to go in your pool after shocking it .

RELATED: Can You Catch Coronavirus in a Swimming Pool—and Does Chlorine Kill the Virus? Here's What Experts Say

When is it safe to go into a pool after it’s shocked?

In general, it's recommended that you wait up to 24 hours to hop into a pool after it's been shocked, depending on the size of the pool, Alan says.

If you're overseeing the pool maintenance, Alan says it's also a good idea to test the water's pH and chlorine to make sure they're in the right range before you or anyone else gets in the pool. (A good chlorine level is between 1.0 and 4.0 parts per million, and the pH should be between 7.2 and 7.8, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.)

What can happen if you go into a pool too soon after it’s been shocked?

There are a few potential issues. "Chlorine will react with water to produce an acid," Alan says. "The effects will be different depending on whether chlorine is inhaled or whether there is skin or eye contact."

At a minimum, "you would definitely get dry skin," Gary Goldenberg, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, tells Health. And, if you happen to have a skin condition like eczema or psoriasis, Dr. Goldenberg says this could cause a flare. You may even deal with symptoms like burning, redness, pain, and blisters, Alan says.

But the water can also impact your eyes and lungs. "Eye effects would include pain, redness, blurred vision, and watery eyes," Alan says. "The inhalation effects are typically the most severe and include shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing, and fluid in the lungs."

RELATED: Can You Get Flesh-Eating Bacteria From a Pool?

And, if you happen to accidentally drink some pool water, you could end up feeling nauseous even throw up.

Luckily, Alan says, "the effects are typically reversible." If you hop into a pool too soon after it's been shocked and you start to notice symptoms, Alan says it's important to get out ASAP and get to fresh air (i.e. away from the pool). "Remove all exposed clothing and wash all the affected areas thoroughly with soap and water," she says. If you wear contacts, she also recommends taking them out, pitching them, and "thoroughly" rinsing your eyes with saline solution.

If your skin feels uncomfortable after you've cleaned off, Dr. Goldenberg recommends using a moisturizer and even a topical steroid cream if your symptoms don't improve. And, if you have trouble breathing, Alan says it's time to call 911.

It's tough to have to wait to hop into a pool, but it's definitely not worth messing with your health.

Here's How to Tell If Your Hand Sanitizer Is Expired https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-can-hand-sanitizer-expire/ https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-can-hand-sanitizer-expire/#respond Mon, 24 May 2021 00:00:00 +0000 https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-can-hand-sanitizer-expire/ Over the last year, hand sanitizer has become an essential part of our personal COVID-19 toolkits. And that's unlikely to change any time soon: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that even those who've been fully vaccinated continue to take steps to slow the spread of the coronavirus, which includes using hand sanitizer when soap and water aren't available.

So yeah, having a supply of hand sanitizer is a pretty sensible move. But don't go stockpiling until you know about hand sanitizer expirations.

Can-Hand-Sanitizer-Expire-Heres-What-Experts-Say-AdobeStock_49117041-gif Can-Hand-Sanitizer-Expire-Heres-What-Experts-Say-AdobeStock_49117041-gif , PhD, professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology at Colorado State University. "The concentration of the two active ingredients, alcohol and hydrogen peroxide, decreases over time," Dobos tells Health. "The alcohol concentration decreases through evaporation, and the hydrogen peroxide concentration decreases through conversion to water."

The good news is that if you use hand sanitizer regularly, you'll probably finish the bottle long before its expiration date. If it's stored unopened and in a cool, dry place, it could last up to 12-18 months, Dobos says. She suggests treating hand sanitizer like you do your sunscreen sprays and insect repellents and replacing it if it's not been used in about a year or so.

As an over-the-counter drug product, hand sanitizer generally must list an expiration date unless the manufacturer has data showing that the product is stable for more than three years, according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"All items sold with pharmaceutically related uses are required to have expiration dates," William L. Schreiber, PhD, chair of the Department of Chemistry at Monmouth University in New Jersey, tells Health.

RELATED: The 19 Best Hand Sanitizers That Meet the CDC Guidelines

Where you store your hand sanitizer affects its expiration

So yes, most hand sanitizers have expiration, or use by, dates. However, those dates are just estimates, since all sanitizers are stored or used under different conditions and, therefore, lose their potency at different rates.

One thing that's guaranteed to speed up the evaporation of the alcohol and the conversion of hydrogen peroxide to water (and therefore speed up the expiration date) is leaving it in a hot car, Schreiber warns; although it should be fine to keep a small bottle of it in your glovebox for short periods. (The FDA advises against storing hand sanitizer in a car during the summer months.)

"How long a sanitizer lasts is definitely a function of storage conditions," Schreiber says. "The alcohol will certainly evaporate faster in a hot car than most other storage conditions, rendering the product ineffective."

In general, the experts recommend storing hand sanitizer at a temperature of 45 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and always out of reach and sight of children.

RELATED: DIY Hand Sanitizer Recipes Have Taken Over the Internet—But Are They Even Safe?

Is it safe to use expired hand sanitizer?

If you've realized you've been using hand sanitizer that's past its use by date, don't worry—it's not a massive issue, and it's definitely not harmful. "Expired hand sanitizer isn't dangerous," Dobos says. "But it is less effective."

And it's better to use expired hand sanitizer than nothing at all—a situation Dobos has found herself in. "When hiking or at the park with my kids, when there's nothing to wash our hands with—especially in winter when the water is turned off—expired hand sanitizer is definitely better than nothing," she says.

Expired hand sanitizer may be less effective because the disinfectant properties are weaker, but the physical motions you go through to apply it (known as mechanical washing) is still a plus, Dobos adds. "Since hand sanitizers also contain some glycerol (or aloe), this helps break up dirt with mechanical washing," she explains.

Schreiber advises using your best judgment. "If a bottle has never been opened, but is near or past its expiration date, it's likely to be OK," he says.

RELATED: Sanitize vs. Disinfect: What's the Difference?

Can you tell if hand sanitizer is expired?

Apart from checking the expiration date, it's not easy to tell if hand sanitizer is expired. "The alcohol used for hand sanitizer has to go through a process known as 'denaturation' (since it is not to be consumed), which results in a slight aroma," Dobos explains. The purpose of this process is to make it less appealing to ingest, according to the FDA. Basically, the denatured alcohol makes the hand sanitizer taste bad and deters kids from digesting it—once they've had a taste, they won't want to continue eating it.

While Dobos doesn't necessarily endorse "smelling" hand sanitizer, she suggests putting some on a surface and wafting your hand over it to smell, and therefore determining whether the alcohol content is still reasonably high. (FYI, the CDC recommends using hand sanitizers that contain a minimum of 60% alcohol.)

Another good indication that the alcohol content is still reasonably high is seeing how viscous (aka thick) the sanitizer is, Dobos adds. If it's looking pretty thick and gloopy, or takes longer to dry on application than it used to, it's probably time to replace it.

This Is the Right Way to Wash Your Fruits and Veggies, According to Science https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-how-to-wash-fruits-and-vegetables/ https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-how-to-wash-fruits-and-vegetables/#respond Mon, 24 May 2021 00:00:00 +0000 https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-how-to-wash-fruits-and-vegetables/ You know that fresh fruits and vegetables are good for you. But you may be wondering if you really need to wash them and if so, how? Here's the lowdown on the best ways to wash fresh produce from your local farmer's market and grocery store—or even your own backyard.

How-to-Wash-Fruits-and-Vegetables-According-to-a-Nutritionist-GettyImages-88307658 How-to-Wash-Fruits-and-Vegetables-According-to-a-Nutritionist-GettyImages-88307658 , including E. coli, salmonella, and the microbes that cause norovirus, can result in foodborne illness.

Research ties pesticide residue to negative health effects, too. For example, dietary pesticides may be associated with adverse reproductive consequences for women, specifically a lower probability of pregnancy and live birth following infertility treatment, as Health previously reported. Men's fertility may also be negatively impacted by eating produce with high levels of pesticide residue, according to a study from the journal Human Reproduction Consumption.

RELATED: 4 Health Benefits of Radishes—and How to Add More to Your Diet

Here’s how you should wash your fruits and vegetables

There are solid, science-based ways to wash your fruits and veggies at home. But first, a few methods aren't recommended. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not advise washing fruits and vegetables with soap, detergent, or commercial produce wash. "Produce is porous, so soap and household detergents can be absorbed by fruits and vegetables, despite thorough rinsing, and can make you sick," the agency says. The FDA also notes that the safety of the residues of commercial produce washes is not known.

Instead, here's what the FDA does recommend: Before you prepare and/or eat produce, wash it all thoroughly under cold, running water. And for firm produce, such as cucumbers, scrub it with a clean produce brush, like this ring-shaped cleaning brush from Full Circle ($5; amazon.com). "After washing, dry produce with a clean cloth towel or paper towel to further reduce bacteria that may be present on the surface," the FDA adds.

For items like bagged greens or baby carrots that are "pre-washed, ready-to-eat," the FDA says you can eat the produce without further washing if that's clearly stated on the packaging.

So washing fruits and vegetables with water will remove even the pesticides?

In most cases, washing and soaking can only lead to a certain degree of reduction in pesticide residue level, according to a 2018 study from Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture. If appropriate, peeling your produce can reduce pesticide residues more effectively. But it's important to note that the benefits of eating five to seven servings of produce daily far outweigh the risks of pesticides. In other words, even if washing doesn't completely remove residues, you will better protect your health by consuming fruits and veggies as compared to avoiding them.

Compared with conventionally grown veggies and fruits, organically grown produce has been shown to contain lower detectable levels of pesticide residue. However, even organic, fresh produce must be washed before you consume it.

Can you use vinegar to wash your fruits and vegetables?

You might have heard that vinegar is one way to clean your produce. But an investigation that looked at the efficacy of different cleaning methods, including a vinegar solution, in reducing bacterial contamination on fresh produce agrees with the FDA's water-only guidelines.

In the study, lettuce, broccoli, apples, and tomatoes were exposed to bacteria and then cleaned with either a two-minute soak in tap water, commercial produce wash, 5% vinegar solution, 13% lemon solution, rinse under running tap water, rinse and rub under running tap water, brush under running tap water, or wet/dry paper towel wipe.

The researchers found that the results did vary a bit based on the type of produce. For example, presoaking in water before rinsing significantly reduced bacteria in apples, tomatoes, and lettuce, but not in broccoli. And levels of bacteria on the surface of lettuce after soaking in lemon or vinegar solutions were not significantly different from those on lettuce soaked in cold tap water. However, overall, the scientists determined that, before consumption, the best approach is to wash produce under cold, running tap water, and rub or brush where applicable.

Produce safety doesn’t stop at washing

Apart from washing your produce, there are other important tips for keeping your fruits and veggies safe to eat. First, choose produce that isn't bruised or damaged. Also, keep fruits and vegetables away from foods like raw meat, poultry, and seafood in your grocery cart and when you get home. When prepping food, be sure to use a separate cutting board for raw produce, and never place salad or cut-fresh produce on a plate or surface that previously held raw meat, poultry, seafood, or eggs. Finally, store pre-cut and highly perishable fresh fruits and veggies (such as berries, melon, and lettuce) in the fridge, and be sure it's set at a temperature of 40° F or below. If you're not sure whether an item should be refrigerated to keep its quality, ask your grocer or grower.

Once you’ve properly washed your fruits and veggies, reap their rewards

A diet rich in produce seriously ups your intake of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. Eating more veggies and fruit can also help manage blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent some types of cancer, lower risk of eye and digestive problems, and support healthy weight management. Eating fresh produce has also been shown in research to support mental health, including reducing psychological distress and improving optimism.

To best benefit from including more produce in your daily routine, use the tips in this article to keep it safe to eat. Also, aim for a variety of types and colors to expose your body to an even broader spectrum of the health protective compounds veggies and fruit provide.

Brooklyn Decker on the Benefit of Spending Time Outside for Mental Clarity During the Pandemic https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-brooklyn-decker-oasis-spaces/ https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-brooklyn-decker-oasis-spaces/#respond Tue, 18 May 2021 00:00:00 +0000 https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-brooklyn-decker-oasis-spaces/ Welcome to Oasis Spaces, a new Health video series where inspiring people share an area in their home that brings them peace and positivity. Watch Brooklyn Decker's Oasis Space tour above!

Model and actress Brooklyn Decker, 34, has been riding out the pandemic the same way many of us have: spending a lot of time in her backyard. "This year, with so many of us locked at home, our outdoor space became truly the space to achieve mental clarity and create some good memories in an otherwise really challenging year," Decker tells Health. "I think our backyards deserve to be celebrated. It's good for the body, mind, and soul."

Luckily, her backyard was already her favorite space pre-pandemic—her "grounding force," as she calls this oasis space. "I remember when I had newborns, a friend told me, [when] the baby's crying, take your shoes off, get barefoot, and just go stand on the earth and hold them," says Decker, who has partnered with ZYRTEC. "And it'll calm them down because you're grounded and they're grounded. It's true."

Decker and her children now like to have dinner in their backyard or watch movies there. Her favorite spot? Under her magnolia tree. "When it blooms, it's magical," she says. "Even in the rain, this place feels like magic."

UV Sanitizers Make Bold Claims-But Do They Actually Work? https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-do-uv-sanitizers-work/ https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-do-uv-sanitizers-work/#respond Mon, 17 May 2021 00:00:00 +0000 https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-do-uv-sanitizers-work/ Makers of UV sanitizers claim their products can sterilize anything in minutes. Many say that their sanitizers can kill up to 99.99% of germs on whatever object you put into the device's UV radiation. But do the UV sanitizers actually work? Here's the lowdown.

Do-UV-Sanitizers-Work-AdobeStock_252340446 Do-UV-Sanitizers-Work-AdobeStock_252340446 of UV radiation is sunlight, which produces the three main types of UV rays: UVA (which is linked to skin aging), UVB (which can cause sunburn), and UVC (which is blocked by the Earth's atmosphere before it can even reach us). It's UVC—the highest-energy UV ray of the three—that's used in UV sanitizers.

UVC radiation is a "known disinfectant for air, water, and nonporous surfaces," according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In fact, the agency reports that UVC radiation has been used successfully for decades to reduce the spread of bacterial diseases like tuberculosis. Although the viruses they studied are different from the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19, researchers recently published a paper in Scientific Reports showing that UVC radiation can inactivate at least two types of coronavirus. But so far, there's very little data about the wavelength, dose, and duration of UVC radiation that may be effective in inactivating the SARS-CoV-2 virus specifically, according to the FDA.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes high-intensity UV radiation as an "alternative disinfection method." But the CDC also points out that UV lights aren't on List N, a list of all disinfectants reviewed and approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

RELATED: Public Restrooms Are Major Germ Zones—Here's How to Stay Safe

How do UV sanitizers work?

UV sanitizers destroy viruses and kill bacteria by using their lights to emit UV rays, targeting proteins and genetic material (DNA and RNA). "They speed up cross-linking of this genetic material, which reduces the ability of the genetic material to participate in healthy replication," Karen Dobos, PhD, professor in the department of microbiology, immunology, and pathology at Colorado State University, tells Health.

UV sanitizers are designed to disinfect a wide range of surfaces, from cell phones to jewelry to stuffed animals. It's important to remember that the sanitizers definitely shouldn't be used on hands (or the skin on any other part of your body, for that matter), William L. Schreiber, PhD, chair of the department of chemistry and physics at Monmouth University in New Jersey, tells Health. The FDA notes that there have been reports of skin and eye burns resulting from improper installation of UVC lamps in rooms accessible to humans.

There are different types of UV sanitizers that are available—from wands to zip-up pouches—to sanitize different types of items. For example, while a wand might be good for targeting household items like doorknobs, a pouch might be best for fitting smaller items like a phone.

RELATED: 'Hygiene Theater' Skyrocketed During the COVID-19 Pandemic—Here's What It Is, and Why It's Not Always Helpful

Do UV sanitizers actually work?

Again, UV rays have been used as a disinfectant for years. Some hospitals rely on them to help sterilize surfaces, and a large study published in The Lancet found that UVC light used in hospitals cut transmission of four major superbugs by 30%.

But UV sanitizers designed for personal use may not be as powerful. "The energy emitted from these bulbs has to be very low to be sold for personal use, which isn't the case for industrial applications," Dobos says. Because they are lower energy, they are likely less effective against microbes (like bacteria, fungi, and viruses) than industrial UV sanitizers, she points out.

The companies selling these products make bold claims. Typically, these claims are based on lab testing by the company selling the product, but it's important to remember that none of these claims have been confirmed by the EPA. Since germs, viruses, and bacteria are invisible to the naked eye, there's no way of knowing how effective the products are when you use them.

Another point to consider when it comes to personal UV sanitizers is that the energy their lights emit wanes over time. "As it decays, it becomes even less effective for its target, and I don't know how a person could tell how these bulbs are decaying," Dobos says. "I'm sure there's a 'replace by' date, but most of us only replace a light bulb when it goes completely out. This is well beyond the effective time for a UV source."

There's also the fact that using a personal UV sanitizer can actually do more harm than good in the long run. "They can be dangerous, especially with repeated exposure," Dobos warns. She points out that because they replicate and mutate so much faster than other types of organisms, many microbes will naturally have some adaptation or resistance to the UV light. "This population of microbes will get greater and greater within your home, especially with repeated exposure," she explains.

RELATED: Sanitize vs. Disinfect: What's the Difference?

What’s the best way to disinfect surfaces?

For all the above reasons, neither Dobos nor Schreiber recommends using UV sanitizers for personal use. Instead, Dobos says cleaning and routine disinfection are the best way to maintain clean, safe surfaces; healthy air ventilation helps, too. "Also, time is on our side," she says. "Most microbes are not stable on dry surfaces—they dry up and die. So keeping surfaces dry, and not constantly using them helps."

The CDC advises using a household cleaner that contains soap or detergent to decrease the risk of infection from surfaces in your home. And when it comes to preventing COVID-19 specifically, the agency notes that disinfection at home is "likely not needed" unless someone in your household is sick, or someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 has been in your home within the last 24 hours. If so, the CDC recommends using a product from EPA's List N to disinfect surfaces and items in your home.

Of course, using a UV sanitizer is a personal choice. If you decide to invest in one, carefully read over the manufacturer's claims and offerings before deciding which device to buy. And don't be fooled by a product that claims to "kill COVID-19." As the EPA points out, COVID-19 itself is a disease, and diseases can't be "killed."

This Feng Shui Expert Explains How Small Changes Can Make your Home a Better Place to Live https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-anjie-cho-feng-shui/ https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-anjie-cho-feng-shui/#respond Thu, 18 Mar 2021 00:00:00 +0000 https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-anjie-cho-feng-shui/ What made you want to explore feng shui?

I studied architecture in college and worked at architect firms in New York City for years. But in my late 20s, I started feeling really unhappy and depressed, like there was something more to life than working nine-to-nine every day. In 2006, my friend and I took a trip to Thailand and were eating in a restaurant in Chiang Mai when a Reiki master offered us a session. I remember crying the whole time—releasing a lot of emotion. When I got back to New York, I started practicing yoga and meditating, and I realized that I needed to bring this spiritual practice into other aspects of my life, including my work. The first thing that came to mind was feng shui. So when I got laid off in the 2008–09 recession, I decided to jump in, study feng shui full-time, and start a business [anjiecho.com].

What can people do right now to make their home a better place to live?

You can start by picking a different burner. When we wake up in the morning and we go to put on some water for our tea or coffee, we usually beeline to our favorite burner. You're probably thinking of yours right now. I'd challenge people to—instead of their habitual pattern—head to the stove and make an actual decision about which burner to use. It's a nice mindfulness practice that sets the tone for the whole day. And in feng shui, the stove represents nourishment, while fire represents passion and inspiration. So if we can look at life a little differently every morning through a simple act like this, you may start to see that moment of intentionality trickle down.

How have you been able to impact others through feng shui?

I teach now and have watched the most guarded student tap into a new level of intuition with the simple adjustment of a desk. Shifting her workspace from a corner nook to a more open layout allowed her to connect with the space in her home, not only for herself but for her creativity and productivity, too. And that confidence has found its way to all aspects of her life.

How do you rely on your home environment to provide you with comfort after a stressful day?

I take a lot of baths. Water is a soothing and supportive element, and the bathroom is where I can cleanse my body, mind, and intentions. My bedroom is also a palace of rest that I've separated visually and energetically from my workspace.

Has your relationship to home changed?

I grew up with traditional Korean parents who placed an emphasis on creating a home that was reliable and stable. It was always a safe space for me. But it wasn't until I lived on my own and started studying feng shui that I realized what areas of my home, and life, were closed off. I used to have my bed pushed up against the wall, for example. I would sleep on the outside, and whoever I was dating would sleep on the inside. In feng shui, this setup signals that you aren't open to creating space for a partner—in the bedroom, or in life. So I repositioned my bed with space on both sides, and now I'm married to my then-boyfriend who has since admitted how uncomfortable he was in the previous situation. When I told my therapist that I moved my bed, she said, "Anjie, this is the first time I've seen you make a change in your environment or your outside life to accommodate someone." Feng shui has given me the ability to see what the universe wants to offer me.

Melissa Joan Hart on How Her Outdoor Living Space Has Helped Her 'Escape' During 2020 https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-melissa-joan-hart-oasis-spaces/ https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-melissa-joan-hart-oasis-spaces/#respond Mon, 14 Dec 2020 00:00:00 +0000 https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-melissa-joan-hart-oasis-spaces/ Welcome to Oasis Spaces, a Health video series where inspiring people share an area in their home that brings them peace and positivity. Watch Melissa Joan Hart's Oasis Space tour above!

TV and movie actress Melissa Joan Hart, 44, made a radical change after COVID-19 hit: She and her family moved to a new house. “It’s been tricky to move during a pandemic, but at the same time it’s kind of a good time because we don’t have anything else on our plates,” Hart tells Health.

She's had to put her usual holiday traditions on hold during the first Christmas season in her new home because she's adamant about social distancing to stop the spread of COVID-19. “I’m trying to look at it like, if I can sacrifice a little bit now, I won’t lose anybody next year. We’ll have everybody around the table next year,” says Hart, who has partnered with food company Heluva Good!

RELATED: Leona Lewis on Why Having an Outdoor Workspace Is So Important to Her

Even though she won’t be hosting large holiday gatherings in her new house this year, her home has still brought her peace during a tumultuous year. Specifically, her patio has helped her relax. “We just moved here about a month ago, so I’ve just discovered that this is sort of my safe place for me and my family,” Hart says. “We can come out here and watch TV, we have a fireplace, [and] we have the barbecue. We have a pool too, which I’m really excited about. The kids are loving it.”

But her outdoor living space is more than a place to be with her family—it’s also a good spot to be alone. “It just gives me a few minutes to reboot and rethink, so when I get out here, it’s kind of special.”

Sutton Foster's Idea of Self-Care Happens in Her Kitchen-And It's So Relatable https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-sutton-foster-oasis-spaces/ https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-sutton-foster-oasis-spaces/#respond Mon, 16 Nov 2020 00:00:00 +0000 https://1millionbestdownloads.com/home-sutton-foster-oasis-spaces/ Welcome to Oasis Spaces, a Health video series where inspiring people share an area in their home that brings them peace and positivity. Watch Sutton Foster's Oasis Space tour above!

Actress Sutton Foster, known for her Broadway roles and on TV's Younger, has used social distancing as an excuse to spend tons of time in her kitchen, her favorite room in her family's lake home outside New York City.

“Before the pandemic, I could make like seven things. Now I can make 50 things,” she tells Health. “Learning new skills—it’s been very, very cool.”

Foster, who has partnered with Lactaid which is 100% real milk, just without the lactose, says that he favorite thing about her kitchen is its accessibility. “What I love about it is that it’s a super open floorplan [and] a pretty large kitchen,” she says.

The kitchen area of her home extends out to her long wood dining table and living room, which makes it easy for the entire family to hang out together while cooking a meal. “Everyone can sit and be together—or, at least, the people we’ve been quaran-teaming with can,” she jokes.

The bright, homey space makes it easy to enjoy family time. “My kitchen is incredibly important to me because I spend a lot of time here, especially during the pandemic where I’m doing a lot of cooking at home,” she explains. “I also cook a lot with my daughter. We bake together and cook and do all sorts of things.”

Kitchen time means so much to Foster that she’s come to think of it as a necessity to help calm and soothe her, especially with the pandemic still continuing. “Being in the kitchen is a form of self-care, even though it sometimes feels like an obligation,” she says.

Watch the video above to find out more about Foster's kitchen, and why it's her go-to place in her home.
