So how did Dr. Obeng remove the glue? "Medical grade adhesive remover that we use in the operating room… aloe vera and olive oil mixture, and then we add a little acetone," he explained to TMZ.

He also demonstrated on a model head covered with afro-textured hair and Gorilla Glue how he crafted the solution to break down polyurethane, the main ingredient in the Gorilla Glue adhesive. "Any compound can be broken down," explains Dr. Obeng, who has a background in chemistry.

When Health first reported on Brown's ordeal, experts recommended a range of products to remove the glue: rubbing alcohol and water, acetone nail polish remover, and various types of oils.

Brown was under light anesthesia for the procedure. She reportedly reached for her hair as soon as doctors were finished, and realized she could finally run her fingers through her previously glued-down hair again.

Dr. Obeng noted that Brown had a lot of scalp irritation from the glue, particularly around the perimeter of her scalp. "The hair was very tough, and very very matted down, and would not lift up," Dr. Obeng said to TMZ. "She is very lucky she did not sustain a lot of injuries to her scalp."

It seems Gorilla Glue is also relieved that Brown was able to remove the adhesive from her hair, per TMZ. "We are glad that Miss Brown was able to be treated and we hope that she is doing well," a rep told the outlet.

Brown revealed the mishap in a TikTok video posted on Thursday, that quickly went viral to over 2.5 million viewers. While describing the incident, Brown is shown patting her hair all over, revealing not a single hair will move out of place, and stating that she's kept the hairstyle for over a month. "I've washed my hair fifteen times, and it don't move," Brown said. As perfect as her hair looked, she warned others not to make her mistake, "unless you want your hair to be like that forever."

How to wash Gorilla Glue out of your hair

First and foremost, it should be noted that Gorilla Glue is really, really not supposed to be used anywhere on the body, including your hair or scalp. "Gorilla Glue is a spray adhesive not meant to be used on hair," Diane Stevens a professional hairstylist and owner of Cole Stevens Salon, tells Health. "It forms a clear, permanent bond that is moisture resistant and is irritating to the eyes, respiratory system and skin—I do not recommend it for hair!"

But hey, accidents happen. If you find yourself in the same (literal) bind, here are what experts recommend you do to remove the glue and save your 'do.

Rubbing alcohol and water

Brown's post went so viral that Gorilla Glue Company actually issued their own statement to Beauty IRL, a beauty newsletter by reporter Darian Harvin, suggesting she try warm, soapy water or rubbing alcohol to gently dissolve the glue, prefaced by not recommending this product at all for hairstyling. "In this case, the less aggressive solvent for her hair/scalp would be rubbing alcohol and we suggest that she saturate her hair, gently comb it out and then use shampoo," the brand writes. "If her hair has truly been glued down to her scalp and immobile for a month with that many aggressive attempts to wash it out, it is possible her hair is fractured at the root but we certainly hope for the best."

Olive, almond, or baby oil

Textured-hair expert Diane Stevens, who isn't affiliated with Gorilla Glue, recommends using a gentle oil like oil, almond, or baby oil to attempt to remove the glue. "Saturate the glued areas with oil and rub it in for a few minutes," she says. "Leave the oil in your hair for a minimum of 15 minutes, then gently comb through the softened glue with a fine-tooth comb." Oil can help loosen the glue's bonds without any further damage.

Acetone nail polish remover

Mona Gohara, MD, an associate professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine and BIPOC skin expert (also unaffiliated wit Gorilla Glue) recommends using an acetone-based nail polish to gently dissolve the glue, similar to how one would remove nail glue. "Soak a cotton ball with acetone nail polish remover, then soak the hair," Dr. Gohara tells Health. "It will possibly dry and damage your tresses but at least you will have tresses!"

What you should you do in this situation instead?

So clearly, you should only use products meant for hair—like hairspray or spiking gel—to help hold your hairstyles, Stevens says.

Past that, however, if you're styling your hair similarly to Brown often, it may be time to switch up your routine. Because as neat and sleek as her hairstyle is, Stevens still strongly cautions against it, and not just because of the glue Brown used. "Hair should not be pulled so tightly and full of gel," Stevens says. "It is not healthy and can eventually cause hair loss." Just something to consider.

What is rice water?

Rice water is the leftover water rice has been rinsed in prior to cooking, which often contains starchy runoff and occasionally some vitamins, New York City dermatologist Rachel Nazarian, MD, tells Health. The quickest way to make rice water is to soak 1 part rice in 2 parts water for 30 minutes and strain the leftover water into a clean bowl. Though plain rice water is fine, some TikTok users are adding grapefruit peels and essential oils to ferment the water over time before putting it on their hair.

Does rice water boost hair growth?

Unfortunately, no studies prove that rice water can do anything to help speed hair growth. However, there might be something to it. Rice water contains vitamins B and E, which have been linked to hair growth and vitality, Mona Gohara, MD, an associate professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine, tells Health. A deficiency in vitamin B12 is specifically associated with hair loss, according to a 2019 review in Dermatology and Therapy.

What other options are there for hair growth?

Both Dr. Nazarian and Dr. Gohara suggest dermatologist-recommended treatments, such as spironolactone, topical minoxidil, and even platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, which have been shown to improve hair growth. "In general I like recommending PRP, which is when we use nutrients from our own blood to wake up those sleepy [hair] follicles," says Dr. Gohara.

Bars work just as well as traditional shampoos—maybe even better. While every shampoo bar is different, they tend to be made without harsh ingredients, sulfates, microbeads, and detergents that are typically found in liquid formulas, says Bex Gold, founder of The Department of Brands. Wine lovers, rejoice: Full-bodied red is on trend for 2021. Adams is obsessed with "rich sultry reds, such as black cherry and merlot, with burgundy hints." Whether you're a natural redhead or a brunette looking to experiment, "the reds will definitely be bringing sexy back!" says Adams.

Platinum blonde

Fekkai encourages those with short hair to play around with platinum blonde this coming year. This classic cool girl color truly never goes out of style, and it's a fun way to play up any strands of silver hair you might decide you don't want to see. Fun accessories like clips and headbands can spice up the look. For those with longer hair, Adams recommends a mix of babylights and balayage to keep your platinum blonde low-maintenance.

Pastel lavender

Less natural than its platinum blonde counterpart, Fekkai urges anyone who's feeling bold to go with pastel purple. Fresh, feminine, and a little punk, lavender hair has a subtle factor that softens your features and turns heads, especially with a well-crafted pixie.

The best thing about curls and coils is that they offer amazing definition with the right color, and Julie Cornejo, Clairol professional and Wella Colorcharm Top Artist, believes classic ginger red does the trick. The stacked bob

Thick hair, have no fear—the stacked bob was made just for you. This flirty, fun look plays up waves and curls without looking too young. "Stacked bobs are best for thicker, tighter, or denser textures because they still offer volume but take away some of the thickness in the back, creating a softer shape," Mia Emilio, senior stylist at Devachan Salon and member of DevaCurl’s Expert Curl Council, tells Health. "With curly hair, we bend the rules a bit and add more layers than your traditional bob to avoid a triangle shape."

If you're down for major expression, graphic hair color is for you. To get it, just bring in to your salon a picture-perfect graphic you'd love printed on your locks, or trust your stylist and let them have fun. "[This color] sits on the surface and can be bold or soft," says Cornejo. "It's usually done with a stencil placed on the surface of the hair and color is applied carefully. It can also be painted freehand."

"Many clients have been asking for bangs lately because they’re looking for a way to spruce up their style and revive their look," says Emilio. Since bangs are are simple way to switch up your go-to quarantine hairstyle, they come highly recommended to transition into 2021.

Shoulder-grazing cuts

A new year is definitely a time for renewal, and if you've always had long hair, a shoulder-grazing haircut is a great option for a style refresh without the intense commitment of a bob. "It’s still long enough to throw up in a cute ponytail or bun on days when you want a quick style," says Emilio.
